THE KAAMULAN FESTIVAL IN BUKIDNON
Kaamulan Festival is an annual event Bukidnon held in Malaybalay City from the second half of February to March 10. The festival showcases dances, chants, ancient rituals, and indigenous sports performed by tribal folks who gather with town dwellers to celebrate unity. It is considered as one of the remaining indigenous festivals in the Philippines because it commemorates the deep tradition and rituals of ethnic groups that has long inhabited Bukidnon.
“Kaamulan” is from the Binukid word “amul” which means “to gather”. It is the annual gathering of Bukidnon’s 7 hill tribes (Matigsalug, Bukidnon, Manobo, Talaandig, Higaonon, Umayamnon and Tiguahanon) for a purpose. It can mean a datuship ritual, a wedding ceremony, a thanksgiving festival during harvest time, a peace pact, or all of these put together.
