Watermelon probably is the king of fruit during summer this side of the world i live in.   The fruit is in season during summer which makes more affordable than any other fruit.

  1. Watermelon is extremely alkaline-forming in the body.
  2. Watermelons are an excellent source of several vitamins: vitamin A, which helps maintain eye health and is an antioxidant; vitamin C, which helps strengthen immunity, heal wounds, prevent cell damage, promote healthy teeth and gums; and vitamin B6, which helps brain function and helps convert protein to energy.
  3. Watermelon is the king of lycopene leader among fresh fruits and vegetables. Deep red varieties of watermelon have replaced the tomato as the lycopene king.  Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight heart disease and several types of cancer — prostate cancer in particular. Watermelon, however, has the highest concentrations of lycopene of any fresh fruit or vegetable.
  4. Watermelon may have Viagra-like effect. It contains citrulline, which can trigger production of a compound in the body that helps relax the body’s blood vessels, in a way similar to what happens when a man takes Viagra, according to a Texas A&M study.
  5. Watermelon is a diuretic and was a homeopathic treatment for kidney patients before dialysis became widespread.
  6. Watermelon is a very good source of potassium; it helps muscle and nerve function. It can ease inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis.

Alone or in a fruit salad are the most common ways of eating watermelon. While eating the meat of the fruit is the best way to take advantage of all of its nutrients, it is one of the most favorite summer refreshment.
